Surgical Block of the British Hospital consolidates as a regional benchmark

PUBLICATION DATE:

The British Hospital has the best Surgical Unit in the country and one of the best in the region, as a result of the periodic renewal of its equipment, the permanent training of its Human Resources and the maintenance over time of a policy of excellence in provision of care services.

The Surgical Block has 11 surgical rooms equipped with the technology of the last generation, watchs the lowest in-hospital infection rates in the country, aligned with first world standards, and advanced in the adoption of an innovative traceability system for medical instruments, which has a positive impact in terms of patient safety.

At the same time, it promotes the training of its medical and non-medical professionals and within the framework of an "open door policy" a continuous generation of knowledge is processed that is shared with the rest of the health system and with the academy, explained the doctor. Patrick Lyford Pike, medical coordinator of the service and member of the hospital's surgical team.

The British Hospital hosted the 72 Uruguayan Congress of Surgery, within which was organized a theoretical-practical course on Robotic Surgery, a technology that it has and in which it is a pioneer in the country.

The course was given by Dr. Edgar Figueredo, a Colombian-American professor of the specialty, and the practices were held in the Robotic Surgery room of the Surgical Block, where the participants were able to make contact with the robot and perform exercises. Uruguayan doctors attended from the British Hospital, mutualists and the public area, and also from abroad.

“About twenty colleagues participated, with whom we shared knowledge and for whom, in some cases, the congress facilitated their access not only to theoretical knowledge but also to a first physical contact with the Da Vinci robot and to be able to use it” recalled Lyford Pike.

Another room in the block is dedicated exclusively to endovascular surgery interventions, such as aortic prostheses, and since the year it has been transferred to interventional cardiology with cardiac catheterization procedures.

The renewal of all the laparoscopy equipment was processed and the best equipment available worldwide was incorporated, with 3D vision.

All the sciatic lighting, which is the one used in surgery, was also renewed and instrument traceability software was incorporated that, through a microscopic QR code, allows to know the history of each one of the instruments used within the block, which It makes it possible to establish if it was broken or lost, discard it, manage stock, which results in greater safety for patients and the professional team.

During 2022, the Surgical Block of the British Hospital reached a volume of interventions similar to that of the last pre-pandemic year and was consolidated as the best in the country, preferred not only by private insurance companies but also by foreign surgeons who choose it for the high quality of its services.

At the same time, medical professionals from the Surgical Block participated in academic activities in Argentina, Brazil, the United States, France, Spain and Germany, among other countries, and in themes, such as urological surgery, gynecological surgery, hepatobiliary surgery, oncological surgery, coloproctology and corneal surgery, among others,.
