We have the pleasure to inform about the incorporation of Travel Medicine at the service of all our members.
Travel Medicine is a medical specialty that was constituted as such in the early 80’s, initially orientated to the diagnose and treatment of pathologies acquired while travelling that become manifested during the trip or at the return of them, sometimes constituting the origin of emergent or re-emergent diseases in different geographical areas.
As a medical specialization, it integrates different medical aspects: epidemiology, medicine, paediatrics, infectology, public health, tropical medicine among others.
As the touristic activity has seen an exponential growth year past year in our country, travellers counselling is today a fundamental element when planning a trip.
To this is added the growing accessibility to remotes destinations, travellers of all ages (life’s opposite ends), globalized working activity, etc.
The travellers’ assistance includes a personalized and high-quality risk assessment related to the trip and depending to the characteristics of the traveller, the itinerary / place of the trip, associated activities and potential exposure, according to international recommendations and epidemiologic profiles of the destinations.
It consists of:
- Evaluation before travelling, which goal is to prevent immunopreventable diseases, provide the necessary immunizations, as well as recommendations about preventive behaviour to certain environmental exposures (use of repellents, barrier protection, extreme or height tourism care, STD’s prevention).
- After travelling assistance, which enables the risk contextualization of someone who has been abroad. A correct register on the medical record orientated to some particular aspects of the trip such as the chronology and type of symptoms, an adequate physical examination, and the possibility of lab tests makes this event something bigger that a medical consultation.
