Professionals from the British Hospital participated in a humanitarian mission on a cruise

Last Sunday, 5th of April, nine professionals from the British Hospital participated in the health mission arranged by the national authorities on the Greg Mortimer Cruise, in order to provide assistance and assess the medical situation of 128 passengers and 83 crew members.

 

Six doctors and three Nursing Graduates from the British Hospital voluntarily participated in the action coordinated by the Ministry of Public Health of our country and which took more than twelve hours.

 

The professionals boarded the cruise which anchored about twenty kilometers away  from our coast, once there the Covid 19 test was done to all passengers and crew members. According to the information provided from the cruise, more than twenty-two infected by the virus have been registered so far.

 

Due to their health condition, as they presented acute respiratory symptoms, three of the evaluated patients had to be moved to Montevideo to receive specialized care and one of them was hospitalized in the Intensive Care Unit of the British Hospital.

 

At the same time, the Public Health Ministry ordered the implementation of a telemedicine system in order to monitor the evolution of the remaining passengers and crew members health.

 

Martin Wells, the Board of Directors Chairman of the British Hospital, thanked doctors Marcelo Chiarella, Adrián Aguiar, Patricio Vanerio, Sofia De Vetolaza, María Noel García and Carlos Chichef; the Nursing Graduates Ana Saulis, Silvina Pintos and Laura Acosta, for the commitment and dedication to the service they demonstrated.

 

“The country needed them and they voluntarily responded in the best way, honoring their professional vocation, with a high sense of humanitarian commitment. They reflected in an unbeatable way the spirit of the British Hospital, this fills us with pride and gratitude, "he said.
