National Day of Voluntary Blood Donor: Donors Club

In commemoration of the “National Day of the Voluntary Blood Donor” different interventions take place in the Hospital with the purpose to educate and encourage the Voluntary Donation Healthy Community. This year by incidental talks in Morales Polyclinic Hall, we raise awareness for our members about the importance of being a volunteer blood donor. Committed to that mission, the British Hospital has today two volunteer club donors. In 1998 a small number of employees gave rise to the first Donors Club, being their beneficiaries more than 500 employees besides their close relatives: father, mother, siblings, spouse and offspring. In 2005 the proposal was forwarded to the Hospital Scheme Members, leading to the creation of a second Volunteer Club Donors aimed to our members and their families. The implicit target in the achievement of the clubs system is to “unify known and healthy people in order to reach a good product” explains Beatriz Flores, Tc. Tranfusionist of the Hospital.  Club members are committed to donate blood each year, ensuring a satisfactory quality product. Consequently, it is possible to provide sufficient blood to members and relatives in circumstances in which donations are essential. The number of volunteer donors has been annually growing at a rate of 10 percent, constituting the 30 percent of the blood that the Hospital Transfusion Medicine Department manages. The Head of Area, Dr. Diego Estol, mentioned that their purpose consist in reversing the equation, expecting to reach a 70 percent of the blood volume from the members Donors Club, with the intention to provide peacefulness to possible receptors and their families.
