Prematurity Prevention World Day

On November the 17th, is commemorate the World Day on Prematurity Prevention, established by the World Health Organization in order to prevent babies from a premature birth as well as avoiding associated risks. One in 20 babies is born prematurely. Premature birth is presented as the leading cause of death among infants and the second leading cause of death among children less than five years behind pneumonia. Experts say that three-quarters of the deaths of premature babies could be prevented with existing, effective and inexpensive interventions and even with no need of intensive care services. In the context of this World Day focused on premature babies, the British Hospital is committed to the cause and provided a list of suggestions in order to prevent and treat prematurity: 1- Prematurity is partially preventable. Every pregnant woman has the right to receive prenatal care. 2- Every premature child is unique and requires special attention according to their needs. 3- Premature child has the right to be attended in appropriate places at the moment of birth. 4- The role of the sick has a primary value in the care of premature babies. 5- Premature babies have advantages if they are breastfed. 6- Every premature baby has the right to an early blindness prevention caused by Retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) 7- A child who was premature at high risk should then access to high neonatal special monitoring programs. 8- The family of a premature has the full right to be informed and in the participation of decision-making. 9- A premature child has the right to be in the company of the family all the time. 10- Preterm birth people have the same right to social integration than those born at term.
