Food Revolution Day

The 15th of May was celebrated the global campaign “Food Revolution Day” propelled by the British Chef Jamie Oliver, whose motto is “Fighting for food education”. According to data from the World Health Organization, in 2013 more than 42 million children under 5 suffered from obesity. From 1980 to 2014 this number has been multiplied reaching epidemic proportions worldwide, states the OMS. At the same time, the system indicates that “children obesity is associated to a higher probability of obesity, premature death and disability in adulthood. But in addition to these higher future risks, overweight children suffer from breathing difficulties, increased fracture risks and hypertension, presenting early cardiovascular disease signs, insulin resistance and physiological effects”. To that effect the Food Revolution campaign aims to situate food education in public agendas of government, systems, public and private institutions, with the purpose that they contribute to generate quality information in what healthy eating is concerned. As it names indicates, its mission is to generate a food world revolution, based on the idea that is food education the way from which it is possible to fight against obesity, change the habits and encourage the development of a healthy, full and happy life. For this purpose, the Food Revolution Day is a day to invite children to get into the kitchen, encourage them to cook, share and enjoy healthy food, either in schools or in their homes together with their family. This year it has the support of more than one thousand ambassadors who express solidarity with the cause and committed themselves to fight so that children and their parents could learn to identify and prepare healthy food, reaching more than six hundred and seventy five cities and ninety four countries around the world. In commemoration of this day and reaffirming its interest in educational healthy lifestyle habits, the Hospital celebrated with a new edition of Petit Gourmet workshops which it has been carried out since 2012 together with the Chef Diego Ruete, ambassador of the Food Revolution in Uruguay. These activities organized by an interdisciplinary group of professionals from recreation areas, Diet Therapy and Nutrition of the Hospital together with Diego Ruete, intend to bring food and cooking processes to children from four to twelve years old, promoting healthy food practices from an early age, and contributing to create healthy habits for the benefit and welfare and health of the family. Under the motto of Food Revolution Day 2015, “Join us to the revolutionaries’ crowds making a sandwich!” The children who took part in the workshop made a delicious sandwich of spinach and homemade bread. Under the same motto, children and companions who were in the inpatient Pediatric service were invited with a grilled sandwich of vegetables prepared by the Hospital Gastronomic Service.
